A musical journey through Africa and the African diaspora

African Suites brings together music that reflects the extraordinary breadth, vitality, and cultural richness of African musical traditions and their influence on composers around the world. Rather than presenting a single image of Africa, this program invites us to experience many different musical perspectives—rhythmic, spiritual, celebratory, contemplative, and deeply connected to community.

At the heart of the program is the idea of music as a vehicle for cultural memory. Across generations and continents, composers have drawn upon African melodies, rhythms, dances, and musical traditions to create works that speak both to particular communities and to universal human experiences.

Abdullah Ibrahim

South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim spent much of his career exploring the connections among jazz, African musical traditions, and the diverse musical cultures of South Africa. His music often combines sophisticated harmonic language with the rhythmic vitality and melodic character of his homeland.

Ibrahim's work emerged from the vibrant musical environment of Cape Town and from the cultural complexities of apartheid-era South Africa. His music carries echoes of township jazz, African song, gospel, and the broader traditions of the African diaspora. The result is music that can feel simultaneously intimate and expansive—grounded in a particular place while reaching far beyond it.

Fela Sowande

Nigerian composer Fela Sowande occupies an important place in the history of African art music. Trained in both African and European musical traditions, Sowande developed a distinctive musical voice that brought these worlds into conversation with one another.

His compositions frequently incorporate elements of Nigerian musical practice alongside the harmonic and formal traditions of Western classical music. This synthesis was not simply a matter of combining two musical languages; it reflected Sowande's broader experience of living and working between cultures and his interest in establishing a place for African musical identity within the concert tradition.

Listening Across Cultures

The music on African Suites encourages us to listen for connections: between rhythm and movement, between individual expression and community, between musical traditions and the places from which they emerge.

Some of these connections may be immediately recognizable. Others may reveal themselves gradually—in a rhythmic pattern, a repeated melody, a change in texture, or a moment of unexpected stillness. We invite you to listen not only for what is familiar, but also for what is new.

As you listen, consider the many ways music can carry a sense of place, history, identity, and belonging—and how those meanings can travel across borders and generations.
