Abdullah Ibrahim

The NSS notes the passing of the legendary South African pianist, composer, and cultural ambassador Abdullah Ibrahim, who died on June 15, 2026, at age 91. For more than seven decades, his music blended African traditions, jazz, spirituality, and classical influences into a voice that inspired audiences worldwide.

Known for works such as Mannenberg, Ibrahim leaves a lasting legacy of artistic excellence, humanity, and cultural bridge-building. The NSS is honored to celebrate his music this September with a performance of his African Suite. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and admirers around the world.

Musician Spotlight

Katherine Colburn

Katherine Colburn received her Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance from the University of Miami in 1997, and her Master's degree in Cello Performance from George Mason University in 2009. She has served as a cellist with the Prince William Symphony, American Festival Pops Orchestra, Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra, Manassas Chorale, and is a founding member of the National String Symphonia. Mrs. Colburn was also the founding member of the Manassas String Quartet in 2003 with whom she recorded two CDs under the Lionheart Music East label.
